How to Kill Mustard Algae with Yellow Treat® | United Chemical

Yellow Treat®2

Objective

This guide provides the exact steps needed to completely eliminate persistent mustard (yellow) algae using Yellow Treat II, helping you turn a massive headache into a standard, simple maintenance stop.

Why Mustard Algae is So Stubborn

Mustard algae is notorious for returning even after heavy chemical treatments. Why? Because it develops a highly protective "slime layer" that standard chlorine shock struggles to penetrate. While you might brush it away, the microscopic spores remain and bloom again after the next rainstorm. Yellow Treat II acts as a specialized accelerator; it breaks through that slime defense and utilizes your pool's chlorine to kill the algae directly from the inside out.

Prerequisites

  • Ensure your pool pump and filter are fully operational.

  • Have sufficient liquid chlorine or granular shock on hand (this is required to activate the product).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Equipment: Turn your Pump Switch to the ON position to ensure continuous circulation.

  2. Apply the Product: Add the recommended dosage of Yellow Treat II directly into the pool. Focus on the shady areas of the pool where yellow dust tends to gather.

  3. Activate with Shock: Immediately broadcast your chlorine shock across the pool surface. This acts as a surgical strike, using the chlorine to activate the treatment so it can do its job effectively.

  4. Circulate: Leave the pump running for 24 hours to ensure the chemistry is thoroughly distributed.

  5. Verify and Balance: After 24 hours, check your water clarity and test your chemical levels.

Troubleshooting Note: Don't panic if your chlorine level drops significantly after treatment. This is known as "Chlorine Demand." It simply means the product is working synergistically with your shock to destroy the algae spores. Once the algae is dead, your normal chlorine levels will stabilize.
