How to Clean Pool Tile Scale with Tile Treat

Tile Treat™

Objective

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely and effectively removing stubborn calcium scale and waterline buildup using Tile Treat™ Tile Cleaner, restoring the beauty of your pool's perimeter.

Why Waterline Scale is So Stubborn

As pool water evaporates during the warm summer months, it leaves behind concentrated calcium and minerals right at the water's edge. This creates a tough, crusty white line that bakes in the sun, making it nearly impossible to remove with standard brushing alone.

Tile Treat™ is a heavy-duty, acidic gel specifically formulated to cling to vertical surfaces rather than dripping right into the water. It actively reacts with and dissolves hardened calcium on contact. Best of all, it contains built-in sequestering agents, which means the scale you scrub off is held safely in solution instead of just redepositing onto your pool floor! For long-term prevention of scale buildup, we highly recommend maintaining your water balance using the Hamilton Index™ balancing system.

Prerequisites

  • Safety First: Always wear rubber gloves and safety goggles when handling this acidic product.

  • Crucial Rule: Do not add this product directly to an oxidizer (such as chlorine, bromine, non-chlorine shock, hydrogen peroxide, etc.).

  • Water Level: If possible, lower the pool water level slightly (1–2 inches) below the scale line. This allows the gel maximum contact time with the scale.

  • Spot Test: Always test the product in a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility. This is especially important for pools with colored grout, printed vinyl liners, or natural stone.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Apply the Product: Squeeze a thick, even strip of Tile Treat™ gel directly along the affected waterline area.

  2. Allow for Dwell Time: Let the product sit and work on the surface for 2 to 5 minutes. You may see bubbling occur—don't worry, this is a great sign! It indicates that the product is actively reacting with and breaking down the calcium scale.

  3. Prevent Drying: Keep an eye on the gel. Do not allow the product to dry completely on the surface.

  4. Scrub the Scale: After the dwell time, scrub the area vigorously using a nylon tile brush or a non-abrasive scouring pad. (For heavy, aged scale buildup, a second application and scrubbing may be required).

  5. Rinse the Tiles: Splash water from the pool directly onto the tiles to rinse the product off.

  6. Retest Your Water: Tile Treat™ is an acidic cleaner. If large amounts are used (such as cleaning the entire perimeter of a large pool), be sure to check your pool’s pH and Total Alkalinity after cleaning to ensure they haven't dropped.

Troubleshooting Note: Apply the product as needed to cover the surface area of your tile band. Generally, one quart (32 oz) of Tile Treat™ will successfully clean approximately 30–50 linear feet of tile, depending on the severity and thickness of the scale.
