I used Pool Stain Treat but the stains came back.

Pool Stain Treat is formulated to sequester metals for up to 60 days. However, there are certain things that can counteract Pool Stain Treat and inhibit its ability to keep metals in the water:

  1. Shocking: repeated and excessive shocking can counteract Pool Stain Treat.
  2. Adding large amounts of pH or Total Alkalinity: adding large amounts of pH or TA increaser (i.e. carbonate based chemicals) can cause metals to become insoluble again. It's recommended you add no more than 1 lb. of a balancer to the pool at one time. An added precaution is dissolving it first in a bucket of water before pouring around the perimeter of the pool.
  3. Maintaining a high Total Alkalinity: High Total Alkalinity is the number one factor among metal staining. Make sure to keep alkalinity as low as possible while still being balanced. We strongly recommend you view the Hamilton Index.
