Objective
This guide explains why copper ionizers and mineral systems cause bright teal or black staining on pool surfaces (and green swimmer's hair), and provides the exact steps to safely lift the stains while bypassing your equipment.
The Hidden Cost of "Low Chlorine" Systems
Many pool owners install copper ionizers or mineral cartridge systems because they are marketed as a way to reduce chlorine usage. These systems work by constantly releasing heavy metal ions (primarily copper and silver) into the water to kill bacteria and algae.
However, metals do not evaporate. As the system runs week after week, the copper levels in your water continuously build up. When you eventually add a bag of chlorine shock, or if your pH spikes, this massive load of dissolved copper instantly oxidizes (rusts). It precipitates out of the water, plating itself onto your pool's plaster as bright blue, teal, or dark gray stains. It also eagerly binds to the proteins in human hair, creating the infamous "green hair" effect. To fix this, we must chemically lift the copper off the walls and allow your filtration system to catch the waste.
Prerequisites
A reliable liquid chemical drop-test kit.
No Mor Chlor™ (chlorine neutralizer).
Copper Stain Treat®.
Step-by-Step Instructions: Reversing Ionizer Stains
Bypass the Metal Source: Before treating the symptoms, you must stop the source. Navigate to your equipment pad and adjust your plumbing valves to Bypass the copper ionizer, or turn the unit's System Power to OFF. If you use a drop-in mineral cartridge, physically remove it from the housing.
Prepare the Water Chemistry: Stain removers are reducing agents and will be destroyed by chlorine. You must lower your Free Chlorine to near 0 ppm. If you need immediate results, add a calculated dose of No Mor Chlor™. Additionally, lower your pH to 7.2 to create the ideal acidic environment for lifting the metals off the plaster.
Apply the Stain Remover: Once the chlorine is at zero, broadcast Copper Stain Treat® directly over the stained areas of the pool. This specialized formula will safely break the chemical bond, lifting the oxidized copper off your pool's surface and putting it back into the water.
Filter for 48 Hours: With the ionizer still bypassed, turn your Pump Switch to the ON position and let the system run continuously for 48 hours (2 days). Your filter needs this uninterrupted time to physically trap and remove the lifted copper from the water.
Rebalance and Decide: After 2 days of continuous filtering, slowly bring your chlorine back up to normal levels. IF you choose to keep your ionizer or mineral system, you may now take it out of bypass and turn it back on. Important: If you are actively using a copper ionizer, you must maintain a lower pH (6.8–7.2). Do not use the Hamilton Index™ (which encourages a naturally higher pH), as a higher pH will cause the active copper to instantly oxidize and stain your pool all over again.
