Why Chlorine Reads Zero After Using Sodium Bromide

Chlorine Reads Zero After Using a Sodium Bromide Algaecide

Objective

This guide explains why your chlorine levels drop to zero after using a sodium bromide-based algaecide and provides the exact steps to restore a stable sanitizer level in your pool.

The "Bromine Bank" and Chemical Demand

If you recently treated your pool for stubborn algae using a sodium bromide accelerator (like Yellow Treat®2) and now cannot get a chlorine reading, do not panic! Your test kit isn't broken, and your pool is not unprotected.

When you introduce sodium bromide into your pool, you temporarily create a "bromine bank." The chlorine you add no longer acts solely as a primary sanitizer; it also serves as an oxidizer, converting bromide to hypobromous acid (active bromine) - creating a "hybrid" pool of two sanitizers. The algae rapidly consume this active bromine and the remaining available chlorine. This massive chemical demand and the presence of bromine causes your Free Chlorine reading to plummet to zero until the algae is completely destroyed and the bromide bank is depleted.

Prerequisites

  • A reliable liquid drop-test kit.

  • A large supply of liquid chlorine or granular pool shock.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Restoring Your Sanitizer

  1. Verify the Treatment Phase: For 1 to 2 weeks after a heavy sodium bromide treatment, bromine will be present. Standard DPD chlorine tests may read false zeroes or measure total halogens rather than true Free Chlorine.

  2. Run the Filter Continuously: Ensure your Pump Switch is set to ON. Navigate to your Timer Settings and set the pump to run 24/7 to filter out dead organic waste, which will help lower chemical demand.

  3. Test for False Zeroes (Bleach Out): Sometimes, if you add too much shock, the sanitizer level becomes so high that it bleaches the reagent in your test kit clear, tricking you into thinking it's at zero. Hack: Mix 50% pool water and 50% bottled water in your test vial, then add your drops. If it turns pink, your sanitizer is actually extremely high!

  4. Resume Normal Maintenance: Continue adding regular maintenance chlorine doses. As the remaining bromide naturally degrades and the filter removes the algae, your Free Chlorine readings will stabilize and return to normal.
